The Research Doctorate (Ph.D.) constitutes the highest level of education in the university system. Its goal is to prepare researchers who have the skills and aptitude to pursue activities of high quality research in industries, in research centers, in public administrations and in academic institutions. Politecnico di Milano offers Doctoral Programmes in all fields of Architecture, Engineering and Industrial Design. Access to the Doctoral Programmes is selective, based on the verification of the research capacities and potentials by curriculum examination. The Research Doctorate (Ph.D.) degree is awarded at the completion of the Programme, which lasts at least three years.

The School of Graduate Studies is excited to share the results of the 10,000 PhDs Project, which used Internet searches of open-access data sources such as official university and company websites to determine the current and/or first (2016) employment status of the 10,886 PhDs who graduated from U of T between 2000 and 2015 in all disciplines. The study successfully located 88% of PhD graduates.

The Department of History’s doctoral degree program seeks to train talented historians for careers in scholarship, teaching, and beyond the academy. The department typically accepts 22 Ph.D. students per year. Additional students are enrolled through various combined programs and through HSHM. All admitted Ph.D. students receive a full financial aid package from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
The Program in the History of Science and Medicine (HSHM) is a semi-autonomous graduate track within the Department of History. HSHM students receive degrees in History, with a concentration in the History of Science and Medicine. Using the Survey of Doctoral Recipients, the magnitude and consequences of job mismatch are estimated for Ph.D.s in science. Approximately one-sixth of academics and nearly one-half of nonacademics report some degree of mismatch. The influence of job mismatch is estimated for three job outcomes: earnings, job satisfaction and turnover. Surprisingly large and robust influences emerge. Mismatch is associated with substantially lower earnings, lower job satisfaction and a higher rate of turnover. These results persist across a variety of specifications and hold for both academics and nonacademics. Estimates of the determinants of mismatch indicate that older workers and those in rapidly changing disciplines are more likely to be mismatched and there is a suggestion that women are more likely to be mismatched.
