Broadening notions of PhD career paths; team science; big data: so much about doctoral education is changing. Should dissertations change too? If so, how?
A project on the dissertation supported by ProQuest culminated in a workshop held in Washington, D.C. in January 2016. The two-day workshop convened key stakeholders to discuss how emerging technologies and other innovations in doctoral training may shape the Ph.D. dissertation of the future. Presentations were given by graduate deans, publishers, library and information professionals, scholars, and disciplinary representatives.
- certificates of all completed courses specified at the doctoral thesis agreement (changes to the doctoral thesis agreement must be recorded in the annual reports)
- 3 copies of the hardbound doctoral thesis
- submission of the doctoral thesis (form SL/D6)
- signed upload confirmation of the electronic submission
- student record sheet (can be printed out via U:SPACE)
- letter of admission (if any exists)
If needed: request blockage of the doctoral thesis (form SL/W3) if you requested restricted access for scientific papers during the electronic submission process.

Once the thesis is complete, your supervisor determines whether or not it is ready for submission and defence. A committee of professors is appointed to read and approve the thesis and to question the candidate during an oral defence.
Dissertations from Dutch universities are held in high regard
Students work closely with their PhD supervisor and committee while conducting their PhD research and in writing the dissertation. The final product typically consists of three article-length chapters, an introduction and a conclusion.
The dissertation is the capstone piece of the PhD education. It represents an independent and original piece of scholarship and demonstrates the doctoral candidate’s mastery of both content material and the research process. Doctoral candidates complete their dissertation after finishing coursework, passing their comprehensive exams and receiving approval for their thesis proposal from their dissertation committee.
The EAERE Award for Best Doctoral Dissertations in Environmental and Resource Economics is given to encourage and recognize outstanding and innovative academic achievement in the field of Environmental and Resource Economics.
Three dissertations will be awarded every year after peer review of all submissions.
A thematic session with the new winner is organized by the EAERE Council during the next EAERE Annual Conference.
The series is given the name Doctoral dissertations at the University of Agder
The dissertation is also given a number in the row of publications and an ISBN-number
A candidate must present a dissertation demonstrating original and independent investigation and achievement. A dissertation should reflect not only a mastery of research techniques, but also ability to select an important problem for investigation, and to deal with it competently.
