The Baker College DBA program has devoted considerable attention to this transition by scaffolding courses from structured instruction, to guided study, to independent and self-directed inquiry with mentoring. This approach is consistent with the recommendation of The Four Conditions for Optimal Doctoral Completion (Council of Graduate Schools, 2009) that “students and faculty form productive working relationships and interact in a mutually respectful and task oriented manner.” This recommendation is consistent with feedback on a recent DBA Alumni Survey in which 90% indicated that faculty interaction and support on the dissertation contributed to their learning experience to a great extent.
Data indicates that only 56% of doctoral students have graduated 10 years after starting their programs. Completion rates are even lower for women (37%) and non-white students (6%). (PhD Completion and Attrition: Analysis of Baseline Program Data, Council of Graduate Schools, 2008). Withdrawal often occurs in the transition from course work to the dissertation research phase of programs.
